We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Master Toshio Watanabe on January 5th, 2018 at the age of 100 years. Master Watanabe was a student of the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, Grand Master Funakoshi, and he was the teacher of Doshikai’s Sensei Matsuyama. Master Watanabe’s teachings live on in the Doshikai dojo, and we all draw inspiration from him as we look at his photo on the dojo wall. Master Watanabe’s wake was held on January 12th, 2018. The 85th anniversary of the Waseda University Karate Club was held on September 24, 2016. Sensei Nagao Matsuyama was there with over 200 graduates and guests. The Doshi-Kai history was shown by old pictures including some from sensei’s college years at the reception. Sensei even had to make a speech. Sensei Matsuyama is back from Japan, and on Saturday, February 18, 2017 he taught a three hour long class. We did kihon, Tai Jutsu, and Bo Jutsu building upon the techniques Sensei taught us in August. At the end of class, Sensei Matsuyama presented shodan and nidan certificates to the four people who promoted to shodan and nidan in August: Melynda Gambino (Shodan), Poul Williams (Shodan), Andrea Tondo (Nidan), and John O’Gara (Nidan).
