On two Saturdays in June, 2019, Sensei Nago Matsuyama taught a couple of 3-4 hour long classes. Students from other schools were invited. The first Saturday we had visitors from Haverhill Shotokan Karate-Do Club. The second Saturday we had visitors from the New England collegiate karate clubs. Sensei Matsuyama’s classes focused on tai sabaki (shifting of the body) in karate, wrist locks followed by throwing or controlling the opponent, and bo-jutsu. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Master Toshio Watanabe on January 5th, 2018 at the age of 100 years. Master Watanabe was a student of the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, Grand Master Funakoshi, and he was the teacher of Doshikai’s Sensei Matsuyama. Master Watanabe’s teachings live on in the Doshikai dojo, and we all draw inspiration from him as we look at his photo on the dojo wall. Master Watanabe’s wake was held on January 12th, 2018.
